What better way to test your sailing skills than pit them against a group of competitive sailors in a race to the finish line? CYC sponsors and/or plays a role in a variety of racing fleets and events to give you the opportunity to do just that! Race management is provided as necessary for all sailboat racing. This includes one-design racing as part of the Tri-club association, Commodore's, Winkle, and Vanderbilt Cup Regattas, Frostbite racing, and Junior Sailing Regattas. Protest Committees are also provided for these events as needed.
One-Design One-design racing has been an institution at CYC since the club was founded.  The fleets that raced in the early years were Lightning's, Comets, Thistles, Stars and Penguins. In the 1960’s the Luder-16 class became very active, until it disappeared around 1982. The Ensign class became active in 1963, and is still going strong. The J-24 fleet became active several years ago but does not race under the Tri Club Association. The latest addition to one-design racing is the Ideal 18. The J-24s, Stars, Ensigns, JY-15s and Ideal 18s are actively raced today. To see the Tri Club Racing Association 2009 Notice of Race, Click here. To see the Tri Club Racing Association 2008 Sailing Instructions, Click here.  SCHEDULE 2009  Sunday Races – Normally, there will be two short races for Ensigns and one long race for Stars. The scheduled race committee is indicated in the Notice of Race. The first warning signal each day will be made at 0930. The order of starts for the first race of the day is Class I (Stars), Class II (Ensigns), and Class III (any other classes). If the race committee intends to start another race for a class, it will display the Second Substitute (with no sound) and the class flags(s) of the class(es) having another race, while boats are finishing.
PHRF CYC has had a long involvement in "Big Boat" Racing, which is currently run under the PHRF rating system. We host two major events: the Winkle Cup, scheduled for September 2010, which was organized in 1955 and has been an annual event ever since; and the Vanderbilt Cup, scheduled for October 2nd 2010, organized in 1981 in conjunction with the Vanderbilt museum, is also an annual event now hosted by Centerport Yacht Club. A smaller, CYC-only PHRF race is the Commodore's Cup.  This race is run in conjuction with the Fleet Captain's picnic and is scheduled for Sept. 13th.
